Family Scientific Name: Asteraceae
Scientific Name: Balsamorhiza sagittata
Common Name: Arrowleaf Balsamroot
Species Code: BASA3
General Distribution: Widespread across most of the western US and parts of western Canada.
Propagation Goal: Seeds
Propagation Method: Seed
ProductType: Propagules (seeds, cutings, poles, etc.)
Stock Type: seed processing
Propagule Collection: Seed heads were clipped into paper bags once they have dried out enough that seeds readily fall out. Seeds can also be rubbed out of the head to avoid collecting unnecessary inert matter.
Propagule Processing: Pre-Processing - Collected material left in open paper bags and placed in low humidity room until ready for cleaning.

Processing - Seed heads placed in drum thresher to dislodge seed. Material then sieved with 12/64" (round perforations) to remove larger inert matter. Unbroken seed heads may need to be rerun through drum thresher to ensure all seed is freed. Seed was then run several times through an aspirator to remove smaller inert material and empty seeds. *Note: The aspirator runs more efficiently if the light fluff produced by the drum thresher is sieved out first. This can be accomplished with a 40x40 (wire mesh) sieve.

Processing equipment:
• Drum Thresher - design consists of a steel 5-gallon drum with a hole welded in to the center of the bottom of the drum and to the top lid to allow for a long drill bit to be threaded into the drum. The drill bit has chains welded to it that are approximately equal to the radius of the drum.
• Sieves - Purchased from Seedburo.
• Aspirator - The design can be found here: https://www.realseeds.co.uk/seedcleaner.html *Note - Design was originally intended for cleaning larger vegetable seed. Design can be amended to be more suitable for smaller seeded species by selecting construction materials that minimize static electricity build up and by using a low CFM vacuum.
