Family Scientific Name: Meliaceae
Family Common Name: Mahogany family
Scientific Name: Aglaia A. mariennensis
Common Name: Mapuñao
Ecotype: Guam
General Distribution: Found in volcanic soils of the Mariana Islands north of Saipan, and in limestone forests. On Guam it can be found in the northern limestone of the island.
Known Invasiveness: This is not known to be invasive on Guam
Propagation Goal: Plants
Propagation Method: Seed
Stock Type: 1 gal. root maker
Time To Grow: 1-2 months after sowing
Propagule Collection: The fruits are yellow-orange when mature, elliptical, scaly, and grape-sized. About two to three seeds are in each fruit. Seedlings from moist limestone forests are also used as a propagation method. Aglaia mariennensis is usually found on the northern island of Guam, particularly near Ritidian Beach and the Calvo raceway in Yigo.
Propagule Processing: Seeds are sown directly in well-draining soil.
Growing Area Preparation/
Annual Practices for Perennial Crops:
Once the seeds are sown in sterile soil or peat moss. The seedlings sprout for about two to three weeks. Sometimes mapuñao is grown in a tray or tubes. The plant or seedling should be no taller than 3 times the container where it sprouted, if it grows taller it is overgrown and the root won't grow properly or it will J root. Seeds are sown shallowly, about the size of the seed is the depth. It takes about a week in the shade or when the first true leaves sprouts, then gradually bring out to sunlight.
Hardening Phase: The hardening phase starts by slowly introducing the seedling to sunlight, which takes about a month after the first two leaves have sprouted. Since Aglaia Mariennensis is an understory tree, it does not require much energy from the sun to grow. The forestry and soil resources division's Cetti Bay Nursery brings out the seedlings in an area where there is shade cloth. This is the second phase of hardening before it is finally established to receive full sunlight.
Length of Hardening Phase: 1 year
Harvesting, Storage and Shipping: Seeds are never stored at the nursery.
Outplanting performance on typical sites: Ten feet apart from every mapuñao tree. The depth of the hole should be the depth of the medium where the pot was housed. Triple 16 fertilizer is used and placed 6 inches away from the tree because it will burn.
