Diagnosing low cone and seed yields from controlled pollinations of southern pines
Rapid improvement of southern pines requires efficient and effective controlled pollinations, but many controlled crosses produce few cones and low yields of filled seeds per cone. Using the known causes of seed failure and cone mortality, a method for relating these causes to problems with controlled pollinations has been developed. This paper describes diagnostic observations of seed failure and cone mortality and procedures to improve the seed yields from controlled pollinations.
