Inbreeding as a Means of Genetic Improvements of Loblolly Pines

Traditionally, there has been much speculation and little basic scientific understanding about the potential uses of inbreeding as a means of improving forest trees. Many of us at some time have indulged in a starry-eyed vision of a four-way, double-cross, super-hybrid loblolly pine (or sub-stitute your own favorite species). Recent data from a study in loblolly pine indicate that inbreeding has rather limited potential as a direct means of tree improvement for this species.
