Decay Resistant Trees
Compartmentalization of discolored and decayed wood in trees seems to be under genetic control. CODIT is a model that explains compartmentalization in living trees. The Shigometer is an electrical pulsed-current meter that can nondestructively detect discolored and decayed wood in living trees. CODIT and the Shigometer now make it possible to start selecting for trees that can effectively compartmentalize discolored and decayed wood to smaller volumes than other trees of the same species. In this sense, we can identify decay-resistant trees.
