Growth Regulation and Cold Hardening of Silver Birch Seedlings With Short-Day Treatment

Height growth and cold hardening of silver birch—Betula pendula Roth—seedlings was controlled with short-day treatment at different times in summer. If the goal is both to retard height growth and to hasten cold hardening, the seedlings should be treated after midsummer; and if the goal is only to hasten cold hardening, seedlings should be treated in late summer. Earlier flushing in the spring following the treatment may expose treated seedlings to late spring frost and cold.
