Influence of Extended Photoperiod on Growth of White and Engelmann Spruce Seedlings in Coastal British Columbia Nurseries

Current knowledge of the effects of photo-period on vegetative growth of northern hemisphere tree species is reviewed. The effects of extended day length versus night interruption, minimum light intensity required and interaction with low night temperatures on growth of 1-0 white spruce (Picea glauca [Moench] Voss) and Engelmann spruce (P.engelmannii [Parry]) seedlings are discussed. Photoperiod regimes currently used for spruce in British Columbia nurseries are described.
