Chapter 9 - Longleaf Pine
The natural range of longleaf pine lies within that ofloblolly and shortleaf pines but extends north and west of that of slash pine, as shown in the range map (fig. 2). Being easier to handle silviculturally, the other southern pines are more intensively managed than longleaf. Low priority for planting has also made it less important in forest tree breeding research programs than loblolly or slash pines. And yet, longleaf pine still forms an important component of pine stands throughout the range.
