Breeding of American Chestnut
The low level of variation in blight resistance among native American chestnut trees has discouraged tree breeders from working with intraspecific hybridization in this species. If a less virulent fungus becomes established, chances are much better that the variation present will be sufficient to develop trees with adequate resistance. A recurrent selection breeding program is outlined and suggestions are made for cooperation in future breeding efforts.
