Biography:

Tom retired in 2004 after 30 years of working as a nursery specialist for the USDA Forest Service.  He is the principal author for Forest Nursery Notes and the Container Tree Nursery Manual, and is working as a consultant on nursery, reforestation and restoration projects.

Professional Experience:

6 Years (01-04 to Present):  Native Plant Nursery Consulting.

I write, edit and distribute the Forest Nursery Notes news and literature service, and the soon to be published Volume Seven: Seedling Processing, Storage, and Outplanting of the Container Tree Nursery Manual (USDA Agriculture Handbook. 674). Other writing projects include writer-editor on a book on Roadside Revegetation with Native Plants and Nursery Manual for Native Plants: A Guide for American Indians.

24 years (8/80 to 01/04):  Forester - National Nursery Specialist, USDA Forest Service.

3 years (6/77 to 8/80).  Assistant Nursery Manager, USDA Forest Service. 

3 years (6/74 to 6/77).  Plant Pathologist. USDA-Forest Service. 

 

Publications and Technology Transfer Services

The Container Tree Nursery Manual is a seven volume series of softbound books that follows the sequence of nursery development, seedling propagation, and outplanting.  Six volumes have been published and Volume Seven will be printed early in 2010.

Write, edit, and distribute the Forest Nursery Notes (FNN) news and literature service.  FNN is a free news and literature service for people who grow or use trees and other native plants. FNN is issued twice a year and contains technical articles, new items, as well as a list of the latest publications regarding native plant nurseries, reforestation, and restoration

Write and edit a nursery manual for American Indian tribal nurseries - A Nursery Manual for Native Plants: A Guide for American Indians

Serve as contributing editor for the Native Plants Journal.

Assist with meetings and projects for the Intertribal Nursery Council.

Co-editor of the Forest Nursery Manual: Production of Bareroot Seedlings, which is still the primary resource for bareroot nurseries.

Numerous other books, chapters and journal articles.
